1st Game, August 14th        Fairfield, Conn  Sounders  10

                                            Troy, MI  Jet Box               9

Jet Box trailed 9-0 after 2 innings, but chipped away trailing 9-8 after 8 innings. In the 9th, Fairfield scored 1 run and Jet Box did the same in the bottom of the 9th. The tying and winning runs were on base when on long fly ball was caught for the final out. Andy Roman had 3 hits and 3 RBI's. Andy Whitney had 1 solo HR and a single.

 

2nd Game, August 15th        Jet Box          13 

                                             Addison, Ill  Braves       12

Jet Box, leading a see-saw game 8-7 after 8 innings, gave up 5 runs in the top of the 9th, but scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th after 1 out. Vic Breithaupt's single with bases loaded, 2 outs, scored John Lierman with Jet Box's 13th run. Breithaupt had 4 hits. Rick Tavormina, Andy Roman, and Matt Viggiano hit HR's. Derek Kraemer was the winning pitcher in relief.

 

3rd Game, August 16th        Jet Box     7 

                                            Brooklyn, NY  Cubs   1

Winning pitcher, Dave Marcon, a former Toronto BlueJay, scattered 6 hits and 1 run in 6 innings. Mark Jacob, a former Detroit Tiger farmhand, pitched 3 scoreless innings in relief. Dave Cooper started his 40th birthday with 3 hits. Viggiano and Lierman each had 3 hits.

 

4th Game, August 16th            Jet Box         15 

                                                Springfield, OH Giants   1

Winning pitcher, Mark Fleming pitched 8 2/3 innings, struck out 10 and allowed 5 hits. Cooper ended his birthday with 3 more hits. Roman had 3 hits, including a 3 run HR.

 

5th Game, August 17th             Jet Box              8 

        FINAL                                Fairfield, Conn Sounders   3

Jet Box scored 7 runs in the 1st 4 innings. Viggiano hit a 3 run HR, Whitney a solo HR, and Captain Rick Vormina was 5 for 5, 1 HR, 1 2B. Bob Bell was masterful completing his 8 hitter with a called strikeout ending the game. Fairfield only scored in 1 inning. After a long wait, this was Jet Box's 29th season, the Box is National Amateur Federation CHAMPS! Jet Box finished NABF runner-up in 1976 and 1989. Jim Corte, manager, wants the nearly 300 former-Boxers to share this championship. 1998 our 30th season will see a reunion of all Box players and a visit to Cooperstown, NY to play an exhibition celebrating 30 years and current NABF champs. John Lierman, making Jet Box team through our Gong Show tryouts in April-May, proved hard work pays off by winning The Most Valuable Player award in the tournament. Lierman had 4 hits in the championship game.
